No Ice Cream Maker~Strawberry Ice Cream

Do you want an easy and delicious summer treat? Try this homemade strawberry ice cream, NO ice cream maker required. All you need is a few ingredients: milk, honey, sugar, vanilla and of course fresh strawberries.

Photobucket

I found this recipe somewhere on the internet. I apologize that I have no idea where I got it from but I am glad I found it.

What you need & What you do:

2 cups of fresh strawberries, wash them, cut them in half, put them in a large freezer ziploc bag and put a few tablespoons of sugar in the bag. Shake them around to coat them with the sugar then put them in the freezer.

Once they are frozen...

Put 2 cups of your strawberries in a blender with 1 cup of whole milk, 1 tsp of vanilla extract and 2 tblsp of honey. Blend until smooth, add more milk if needed. It will make a very thick, soft serve ice cream consistency. So good!

Friday Product Review: Breakfast On The Go

This week I am writing about the new Diamond Breakfast On The Go. One word: YUMMY!

Photobucket

Kiddo and I love nuts, you might say we are nuts about nuts. The 'breakfast on the go' product comes in three different varietys: Smore's Blend, (more of an afternoon snack in my opinion)Berry Nut Blend and Breakfast Nut Blend. I believe our favorite is the Berry Nut Blend. We have enjoyed these with a hardboiled egg and a smoothie this past week. I am giving this product a definite thumbs up.

It IS Yogurt, So It IS Healthy...Right?

We see the commercials all the time urging us to buy the latest and greatest kids yogurt. You know the ones, the yogurts with the coolest, cutest characaters on them. Maybe the ones that taste like cotton candy, or a yummy breakfast cereal have caught the eye of the littlest eaters in your house. But, are those yogurts all they're cracked up to be?

Let's take a look at some of those yogurt products:

Everybody knows that "Trix is for kids." That's why Trix yogurt is the most fun and colorful yogurt, with two colors in every cup and "kids-only" fruity flavors like Wildberry Blue and Strawberry Banana Bash!

While kids love the great taste and the double blast of color under every lid, Moms love the wholesome goodness of real Yoplait® yogurt.

Yoplait, the only leading yogurt with vitamin D in every cup!

Snackin' Around the Clock

An article in the New York Times recently stated that children snack more now than they used to. --

“Children used to come home, change into play clothes and go outside and play with other children,” said Joanne Ikeda, a nutritionist emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. “There were not snack machines, and the gas stations only sold gas. Now there are just so many more opportunities to snack and so many activities after school to have snacks.”

--
I do not find the statement to be 100% true or even 100% false. As a young girl I know that I certainly ate less than my cousins who were boys, and even now as a mom I am aware that my 9 year old son eats more than I did at his age. It seems to depend on the child and also what the snack is that is being offered. Offering a child a brownie or a cookie every afternoon as an after school snack is definitley different than offering them a banana or a cup of yogurt. Let's face it, food is everywhere today, good or bad its here. Its up to us as parents to sensor what our kids are eating just like we should sensor what they are watching on TV. Bad guy fighting movies or PBS educational shows? A bag of potato chips or a bag of sliced apples? Its up to us to make sure their bodies are fed good snacks; having a snack is not a bad thing, its what they eat which makes it a bad thing.

Little Blends Yogurts

Recently a child in my class came in with a new yogurt in his lunchbox. I was super excited to see this product!

Photobucket

Little Blends Yogurt from Horizon Organic. These are yogurts with fruit and veggies in them. The flavor he was enjoying that day was Apple with Butternut Squash.
